Materials That Hold Up in a Houston Kitchen

Cabinets carry most of the budget and most of the daily abuse, so box construction matters more than door style. We specify plywood boxes with solid-wood or plywood drawers and full-extension, soft-close hardware, because particleboard boxes swell at the toe kick the first time the dishwasher leaks. Finishes get the same scrutiny. A factory-applied conversion varnish or catalyzed finish holds up to grease and steam in a way that site-sprayed latex never will, and painted doors should be on a stable substrate like MDF panels in a wood frame so the joints do not telegraph when the humidity swings.

Countertops are a trade-off between look and maintenance. Quartz is nonporous and consistent, granite is durable but needs periodic sealing, and marble is beautiful and etches the first time a lemon sits on it. Whatever you choose, the details decide the result: seams placed away from the sink cutout, overhangs supported correctly, and the template taken after the cabinets are installed and shimmed level, not before. Underfoot, porcelain tile and quality luxury vinyl plank both handle spills and humidity well. Solid hardwood can work in a kitchen, but it moves with Houston's moisture cycles and needs acclimation and a finish that tolerates water.

Layout, Ventilation, and the Work Behind the Walls

Most Houston-area homes sit on a slab, which changes how a layout change gets built. Moving a sink to an island means cutting and trenching the slab for a new drain and vent, then patching it correctly so the floor does not crack later. Opening a kitchen to the living room usually means a wall that carries roof or ceiling load, so we bring in an engineer, size a flush or dropped beam, and install temporary shoring before anything comes out. None of this is a reason not to change the layout. It is a reason to plan it with someone who has done it many times.

Electrical and ventilation are where older kitchens fall furthest behind code. A modern kitchen needs dedicated small-appliance circuits, GFCI protection at the counters, and often a panel upgrade to carry an induction range or a second oven. Ventilation matters more here than in drier climates. A range hood ducted to the exterior removes grease, heat, and moisture from the house, while a recirculating hood just filters some of it and sends the humidity back into the room. We duct hoods outside whenever the structure allows it.

What Separates a Good Kitchen Remodel from a Bad One

The difference shows up in the details a homeowner notices for years. Cabinet runs that are level and plumb, with fillers scribed to the wall instead of a bead of caulk hiding a gap. Doors and drawer fronts aligned with consistent reveals. Tile backsplash laid out from a centerline so the cuts land evenly at both ends. Countertop seams that are tight, color-matched, and placed where the eye does not go. Trim that meets the ceiling cleanly even when the ceiling is not flat, which in an older house it never is.

It also shows in what you do not see. Plumbing pressure-tested before the walls close, electrical inspected before the drywall goes up, and a punch list walked with you at the end rather than a crew that disappears once the counters are in. Drakon Builders runs kitchen remodels with the same scheduling and inspection discipline we bring to commercial work, because a kitchen out of service is a real disruption to a family and the timeline needs to hold.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a kitchen remodel take?

A cabinet, counter, and backsplash refresh typically runs a few weeks once materials are on site. A full gut with layout changes, new plumbing and electrical, and custom cabinetry usually takes two to three months. The longest lead item is almost always cabinets, so we order them early and schedule demolition around their delivery date rather than the other way around.

Can we live in the house during the remodel?

Yes, and most of our clients do. We set up a temporary kitchen station with the refrigerator, a microwave, and a sink if possible, seal the work area with dust barriers, and keep a clean path through the house. You should expect noise during working hours and a few days without water at the kitchen sink during plumbing work.

Do I need a permit for a kitchen remodel in Houston?

Cosmetic work like replacing cabinets and counters in the same location generally does not require a permit. Once you move plumbing, add or relocate circuits, or remove a wall, a permit and inspections are required in Houston, The Woodlands, and surrounding jurisdictions. We pull the permits and schedule the inspections as part of the job.

Do you help with design and material selection?

We do. If you already have a designer or architect we work from their drawings. If you do not, we develop the layout with you, produce cabinet drawings for approval, and walk you through countertop, tile, and fixture selections with lead times and budget in mind so nothing stalls the schedule.

What does a kitchen remodel cost?

It depends almost entirely on scope, cabinet grade, and how much of the plumbing and electrical is changing. Rather than quote a range that may not fit your house, we walk the space, discuss what you want, and give you a written line-item estimate so you can see where the money goes and adjust before work begins.
