Why Choose Drakon Builders?

Bathrooms are the hardest-working rooms in the house, and in Houston's humidity they punish shortcuts. We build them to hold up:

  • Waterproofing done right: proper substrates, pan liners, and wet-area detailing so tile and grout do not fail
  • Skilled tile craftsmanship, from large-format walls to custom shower niches and curbless entries
  • Ventilation and moisture control sized for Gulf Coast humidity to fight mold before it starts
  • Aging-in-place and ADA options: curbless showers, grab-bar blocking, comfort-height fixtures
  • Correct fixture, valve, and drain work so water pressure and temperature are right the first time

Waterproofing Is the Whole Job

Tile is not waterproof. Grout is not waterproof. The waterproofing system behind them is what keeps a shower from rotting the framing, and it is where inexpensive remodels fail. We build showers with a proper pre-slope under the pan so water reaches the drain instead of sitting in the mortar bed, a bonded sheet membrane or liquid-applied membrane carried up the walls and into the niche, and a flood test before a single tile goes on. Curbless showers, which more clients ask for every year, need the floor recessed or the drain relocated so the slope works without a curb, and that is planned at framing, not discovered at tile.

Wall substrate matters as much as the membrane. We use cement board or foam backer board in wet areas, never standard drywall behind tile, and we treat the seams and fastener heads so the assembly works as a system. Around tubs, the flange gets flashed into the wall waterproofing rather than caulked and hoped for. These details add a day or two to a bathroom remodel and years to its life.

Tile Work, Fixtures, and Moisture Control

Large-format tile and slab-look porcelain look clean, but they are unforgiving. Lippage, the edge-to-edge height difference between adjacent tiles, shows immediately on a 24 by 48 tile, so the substrate has to be flat before tile starts, and we use a leveling system and full mortar coverage rather than spot bonding. Grout choice matters too. In a shower that gets daily use, a high-performance or epoxy grout resists staining and does not need the yearly sealing that cement grout does.

Houston's humidity means a bathroom needs to dry out between uses or mold wins. We size exhaust fans to the room, duct them to the exterior instead of dumping into the attic, and often install a humidity-sensing switch so the fan runs until the room is actually dry. On the plumbing side, valves are set to the correct depth for the finished tile, drains are located before the pan is built, and supply lines are pressure-tested before the walls close. Fixture quality is your call, but installing it right is ours.

Remodeling Bathrooms in Older Houston Homes

Much of Houston's housing stock dates from the 1950s through the 1980s, and those bathrooms come with known issues: cast-iron drains that have corroded from the inside, galvanized supply lines that have narrowed, and slab foundations that mean relocating a toilet involves cutting concrete. We assess all of this at the walkthrough so it is in the estimate, not a surprise on demolition day. When a slab cut is needed, we trench, reroute the drain with the correct fall, and repour so the floor stays sound.

Small bathrooms benefit from small structural moves. Turning a swing door into a pocket door, stealing a few inches from a closet for a wider vanity, or replacing a tub with a walk-in shower can change how the room works without adding square footage. Aging-in-place details such as blocking for grab bars, a comfort-height toilet, and a zero-threshold entry cost very little during a remodel and are expensive to add afterward. We build them in when they make sense for how you plan to live in the house.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a bathroom remodel take?

A fixture and finish update in an existing layout usually takes two to three weeks. A full gut with new waterproofing, tile, and relocated plumbing typically runs four to six weeks, with waterproofing cure times and the flood test built into the schedule. Custom vanities and specialty tile can extend that, so we confirm lead times before demolition starts.

Can you convert my tub to a walk-in shower?

Yes, this is one of the most common bathroom projects we do. The tub comes out, the drain is usually moved to a center or linear position, a new pan is built and waterproofed, and the walls are tiled. If you want a curbless entry we plan the floor recess or drain location at the framing stage so the slope works.

Is a permit required for a bathroom remodel?

If plumbing, electrical, or framing changes, yes. Replacing fixtures in the same location typically does not require one, but relocating a drain, adding a circuit for a heated floor, or moving a wall does. We handle the permit application and inspections in Houston, The Woodlands, and nearby jurisdictions.

What is the best way to prevent mold in a Houston bathroom?

Three things working together: a properly ducted exhaust fan sized for the room, a waterproofing system behind the tile that keeps water out of the wall cavity, and moisture-resistant board on the walls outside the wet area. A humidity-sensing fan switch helps because it runs the fan until the room is dry rather than until someone remembers to turn it off.

Will you match the finishes in the rest of the house?

We can match or contrast, depending on what you want. Many clients remodel a master bath and a hall bath together so the tile, hardware, and fixture families relate to each other. If only one bathroom is being done, we source finishes that sit comfortably with the existing home rather than fighting it.
