Built for the Houston Climate
Houston humidity is hard on drywall, so we build for it. In bathrooms, laundries, and other wet areas we use moisture-resistant and mold-resistant board, and cement or fiber-cement backer behind tile where it belongs. We also plan mud and finish schedules around real Gulf Coast dry times, because rushing joint compound in high humidity is how cracks and blisters show up a year later. Doing it right the first time is cheaper than doing it twice.
Level-5 Finish and Texture Matching
Not every wall needs the same finish, and we finish to the job. For walls under raking light, glossy paint, or high-end lighting, we can deliver a level-5 finish, a full skim coat that eliminates the flashing and photographing that lesser finishes show. On remodels and repairs, our crews match existing texture, from knockdown and orange peel to smooth, so patched and new areas disappear into the original wall instead of standing out.

Hanging and Fastening That Prevent Callbacks
Good finishing cannot fix bad hanging. We hang wallboard horizontally on walls so joints land at a comfortable height and the number of joints is minimized, stagger end joints so they do not stack, and keep joints away from door and window corners where cracking starts. Screws are set to the correct depth without breaking the paper face, and spacing follows the assembly requirements rather than whatever is fastest. On long runs and where a wall meets a different structure we install control joints so seasonal movement has somewhere to go besides a crack in the paint.
Board selection follows the location. Half-inch board for standard walls, five-eighths-inch type X where a fire rating is required such as garages, shared walls, and most commercial partitions, moisture-resistant board in kitchens and utility rooms, and cement or fiber-cement backer behind tile. Corner bead is chosen for the job as well: paper-faced metal for crisp, durable corners in most work, and vinyl or bullnose profiles where the design calls for them.
Finish Levels and Where Each One Belongs
Drywall finishes are graded from level 0 through level 5, and the right level depends on the light and the paint. Level 3 is appropriate behind heavy texture. Level 4, the most common residential finish, has all joints and fasteners coated and sanded and works well under flat or eggshell paint in normal light. Level 5 adds a full skim coat over the entire surface and is the right choice for smooth walls under semi-gloss paint, large windows, or wall-wash lighting where anything less shows every joint. We specify the level with you up front so the wall you get matches the finish you planned, and we price it that way.
Commercial Drywall and Rated Assemblies
Commercial drywall is as much about the assembly as the finish. Partitions are framed in light-gauge steel with deflection track at the structure so the building can move without cracking the wall. Fire-rated walls and shaft walls are built to a tested assembly, with the correct board layers, fastener schedules, and firestopping at every penetration, because an inspector will check them above the ceiling before the grid goes in. Sound-rated walls between offices, exam rooms, or units use insulation, resilient channel or staggered studs, and sealed perimeters to hit the sound rating the design calls for. We document all of it so the above-ceiling inspection passes the first time.
Repairs and Water Damage
Houston roofs leak, pipes fail, and storms push water into houses. Wet drywall does not recover. We cut back to dry material, confirm the framing and insulation are dry before closing anything, and replace with mold-resistant board where moisture is a recurring risk. Texture matching on repairs is where our crews earn their keep: knockdown, orange peel, and hand textures are matched by sample so the patch disappears once painted. For larger loss repairs we coordinate with your insurance adjuster's scope so the paperwork and the work line up.

How long does drywall take on a new house or remodel?
Hanging a typical house takes a few days. Taping, floating, and sanding take another week or more because each coat of joint compound has to dry before the next, and Houston humidity slows that down. We schedule real drying time rather than pushing coats early, which is what causes cracking and blistering later.
Can you match the texture on my existing walls?
Yes. We match knockdown, orange peel, skip trowel, and smooth finishes by sample, adjusting the mix and the spray pattern until the patch blends with the surrounding wall. Older Houston homes often have hand textures that take more care, and we test on a small area first.
What is a level 5 finish and do I need it?
A level 5 finish adds a thin skim coat of compound over the entire wall after standard finishing, which eliminates the visible difference between joints and bare board. You need it for smooth walls under gloss or semi-gloss paint, in rooms with large windows or raking light, and anywhere with dramatic lighting. In normal residential light with flat or eggshell paint, level 4 is usually sufficient.

Should I use moisture-resistant drywall in Houston?
In bathrooms, laundry rooms, kitchens, and garages, yes, and behind tile you should use cement or fiber-cement backer rather than any drywall. For ordinary living spaces standard board is fine as long as the home is properly conditioned and dehumidified.
