Driveway Cuts, Culverts and Access Roads

Drakon Builders handles driveway cuts, base, culvert installation at the ditch and access roads in The Woodlands, Conroe and Greater Houston. Our fleet is run by our own operators. Machine work is shown in machine-days with operator, based on the access and ground work defined for your site.

A driveway connects the road to the place you need to reach. That route may cross a ditch, turn through a gate or continue to a future house pad. Discuss the full route before focusing on one piece of it so the entrance, base and drainage are considered together.

We work across Montgomery County, The Woodlands, Conroe, Magnolia, Willis, Spring, Lake Conroe and Greater Houston. Tell us whether you need construction access, an approach to a new building or an access road across the property. The intended use helps frame the scope without assuming every driveway needs the same layout.

Lay out the entrance and the route

Start with the road connection, gate location and destination. Bring a survey or site layout if one is available. Identify existing fences, vegetation and structures along the route. A clear line between two points does not tell the whole story if equipment needs room to turn or the ground changes along the way.

Discuss whether the access is needed before clearing, pad work or concrete. The order matters because the route may also serve equipment and material deliveries during construction. Include any planned changes to the entrance so the initial access work and the finished driveway are not treated as unrelated projects.

Driveway cuts and base preparation

The driveway cut and base belong in a defined scope. Identify the intended route, surface and connection to the destination before deciding what ground preparation is included. Where the route crosses changes in grade, discuss those transitions as part of the approach rather than leaving them for the next phase.

Base work should be considered with the ground beneath it and the intended use above it. Share any driveway details supplied for your project. A construction access route and a finished approach to a slab may have different requirements. State which stage you need now and which work is planned later so the handoff is clear.

Culverts at the ditch

A ditch crossing needs to be discussed as both an entrance and a drainage feature. Bring any culvert details or entrance information you already have. The location and surrounding grades matter alongside the pipe itself. Do not assume a culvert from another property establishes what belongs at your entrance.

Our scope includes culvert installation at the ditch. Review how the driveway approaches the crossing and where the ditch continues on either side. Keep the drainage route in view when discussing fill and base around the entrance. If drainage sign-off is needed for the job in unincorporated Montgomery County, we handle it with the county development permit.

How the job runs

  1. 1.Review the entrance, gate and intended access route. Discuss the vehicles or construction activity the route needs to serve and any available driveway details.
  2. 2.Define the driveway cut, base and ditch culvert work. Identify where the access road stops and how it connects to a pad or other planned work.
  3. 3.Plan equipment movement and material placement around the available access. Show machine work in machine-days with operator so the earthmoving scope is clear.
  4. 4.Build the agreed access scope and review the entrance, route and ditch crossing together. Identify any later concrete or finish work as its own stage.

We call Texas 811 for utility locates before digging. For sites that disturb an acre or more, we put the required stormwater controls (SWPPP) in place. In unincorporated Montgomery County, we handle the county development permit and drainage sign-off when a job needs them.

Equipment we use

Our Kubota KX080 excavator, in the 8-ton class, handles digging at the ditch crossing and other excavation along the route. Our Kubota SVL95 compact track loader moves and spreads base material in the work area. Our Cat D6 dozer handles broader earthmoving and rough grading where the access road and available space call for it.

Our fleet is operated by our own operators. Our Cat D1 dozer fits tighter entrances and finishes the driveway grade, and our John Deere 240 excavator handles larger culvert and ditch excavation. Equipment choice follows the entrance restrictions, route and excavation scope. A narrow gate or limited working area needs to be discussed before assuming every machine can reach the work.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you install a culvert at my driveway entrance?

Yes. Culvert installation at the ditch is part of this service. Share the entrance location and any available details so the crossing, driveway approach and continuation of the ditch can be discussed together.

Do you build access roads for construction?

Yes. We handle access roads as well as driveway cuts and base. Explain where equipment needs to reach and which building stages will use the route so access can be scoped around that work.

Can you tell me which culvert size to use?

The crossing needs to be considered for the actual site and drainage layout. Bring any supplied culvert or entrance details. A pipe size used at a nearby property is not enough information to define your installation.

Can the driveway be planned with a new house pad?

Yes. Discuss the driveway and pad together, including the entrance, approach and surrounding grades. We offer building pad site preparation and pour slabs too, with each stage identified in the project scope.

What should I show you before driveway work starts?

Show the entrance, full route, gate openings, destination and ditch crossing. Include available plans and explain whether the work is construction access or a finished approach. Note any areas that must remain reachable during the work.
